The boys never turn down a walk with me and I hope that it never changes. One of the greatest pieces of parenting advice my Mom taught me was the importance of really good listening. Not asking questions, but giving the boys opportunities to talk, whether it’s in the car, at the dinner table, or taking a long walk outside. If J asks to bounce his kickball, or basketball the whole time, I say yes. Rarely does it stop J from talking, but it gives him time to stop and think as he goes through all of his thoughts. And he has many. As they both do. And I’m here to listen, one mile at a time.
Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:30-31
