Sleepy J

We are working on getting J to nap in his crib and eventually sleep at night in his crib (right now he sleeps in a bouncer due to some acid reflux/stuffy nose issues he has had). However, he can pretty much nap anywhere.

So here are some of the many sleeping positions of J, via Instagram…

Sleep Position 1 (couch): The “I don’t care how much space I take up”

Sleep Position 2 (high chair): The “Mommy has to cook dinner sometime and the microwave fan is my favorite white noise”

Sleep Position 3 (car seat): “The I will temporarily sleep here until I realize the car has stopped and remember I hate this car seat”

Sleep Position 4 (Mommy’s Arms): The “I want Mommy to hold me while I sleep from 6-7 am every morning”

J’s Two Month Stats

We went in for J’s two month check-up today. He did great! He had to get three shots and an oral vaccine, but he was a happy baby before that! He is 13 lbs 7 oz (90th pct) and 25 inches long (95th pct). He is keeping up with A’s growth at that age he might end up being taller than him!

Happy baby!

Two Months Old!

Baby J you are two months old! Let’s see what you are up to this month:

You are in size 1 diapers still.

You are growing like a weed, you have completely outgrown your newborn clothes and a good portion of your 0-3 month size clothes!

You are such a smiley baby, and you are already trying to talk! I think you are hoping to keep up with your big brother.

You take about 5-6 bottles a day at about 4-6 oz each. One night you slept for 7 hours straight! Usually you have one long feeding between 7 p.m. and 2 a.m. We have tried to move that last feeding back, but so far our attempts have not worked.

You sleep in the silliest positions! Hand over face, knees scrunched up, or completely sprawled out. You can also sleep sitting straight up, or even when we are holding you in the carrier.

You can hold up your head very well, although you don’t care for tummy time to try this out.

We will get your stats at your two month check-up next week!

One Month Old!

Baby J you are one month old! Here is what is happening with Baby J this month:

He is taking between 3.5-4.4 ounces per feeding and eats about every 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

He weighs around 11 lbs.

He is wearing 0-3 months clothes and some of his newborn outfits, but they are getting a bit small.

He is wearing size 1 diapers (we skipped the newborn diapers to begin with)

He can hold his head up when laying on his tummy.

He takes decent naps during the day and is going back and forth about sleeping well at night. We still are not totally scheduled, but I have worried about that a lot less this time around.

He has gotten the nickname Spike around our house a bit due to his spiky hair, that is still growing! I cannot believe how much hair he has!

We get a good laugh out of his poses when he is sleeping (hands under chin deep in thought), and the way he sighs loudly.

After two night of wanting to be swaddled while sleeping, J is back to sleeping completely spread out and for the most part in his pack n play bassinet.

J you are such a joy! We love you!

Three Weeks Old

I cannot believe three weeks have already passed! Here is what we have been up to!

My husband went back to work this week. Sad. A is still asking if Daddy gets to stay home each day. As you may have read in one of my previous posts the night before my husband went back to work, J did not sleep hardly at ALL, and A refused to take a nap the next day. However, since then J has slept better and is actually going about three hours at night now. I’m still struggling to get A to nap well, I don’t think three year olds drop naps at this age, do they?

J is taking about four ounces of formula per feeding now and is going between 2 and 1/2 and 3 hours between eating. He takes a pretty solid nap around mid day (by solid, I mean a good hour/hour and a half) and then sleeps pretty well (besides waking up to eat) from 8:30 p.m. to around 3:00 a.m…..sometime after 3 something happens. He gets fussy, wants to be held, so on and so forth. Otherwise he catnaps through the day and is awake off and on.

My new favorite app for my Ipod is called “white noise baby”. J has had a couple of fussy periods throughout the last few days and this has been a life saver. I can set it beside the bouncer or outside the pack n play, and he will calm down quickly. For anyone who remembers how many hours and days I spent sitting holding A while I ran the hair dryer, this app is a really nice change.

J’s eyes are still steel gray, which is the color mine were when I was a baby, so I’m thinking he might end up with brown eyes.

All the boys (my son and my nephews) are still infatuated with J, which I think is so funny. Today A and his cousin had a discussion about who J loves more, HA! Sweet boys!

And lastly I had to include a picture of how J sleeps. This is a perfect example of him, stretched out, arms near his head, no desire to be swaddled what so ever.

Sleeping Like a Baby

Whoever came up with the term “sleep like a baby” and references it to sleeping well is seriously misguided. It has been easier to adjust this time around to the lack of sleep as before we had A I had spent luxurious time sleeping steadily from 10:30-11:00 each night to 8:00-9:00 in the morning, and it was fabulous! I am glad I had that time to sleep in because I have never had it since! In the last month of my pregnancy with J I did not sleep well at all. Besides being up and down on a monthly basis with A because of his ear infections, I couldn’t sleep in general and got used to being up at odd hours. So the adjustment to having J wake up three or four times a night for feeding has not been that bad, and my husband and I have switched off getting up with J. Plus, with my husband home for the past two weeks I have been able to nap in the afternoon.

On Monday night we got the true introduction to newborn-hood. Up until now J has slept really well and ate really well at each feeding. Last night, J was up almost all night crying, wanted to eat every two hours, and hardly ate anything several times that we fed him. My husband went back to work today, and A woke up crying for Daddy. As my husband went out the door I looked at A who had already asked five times for “fruit loops with the marshmallows” that we did not have, and J was STILL AWAKE, and I thought…I’m going to need a lot of coffee today. And I know now that my inability to sleep the past month and a half was prepping for now. Because when A was a newborn right now I would be napping, however, I am updating my blog, trying to get a few things done, and rejoicing that in another hour my Mom will be here to take A on a play date with his cousin at their house and I can finally get a shower. And another cup of coffee. 🙂

Now he sleeps peacefully.

Two Weeks Old

A little re-cap of our second week with baby J.

J is now 8 lbs 5 oz (WHAT!), and 21 and 1/4 inches long. Suffice to say he is growing and eating a lot. We are still working on schedules, but he is still sleeping decently in the pack n play at night, and has gone for a three and a half hour stretch at one point. He had a great second week check-up and no shots (except for a yucky PKU test) this time.

We started out with some dancing at M’s birthday party…

During the week we caught up on cleaning, laundry, and vacuuming…

Fit in a few naps…

Kind of.

And managed a quick photo op…

J found playtime exhausting…

And decided to take a nap instead.

I cannot believe two weeks has already gone by!

One Week Old

Baby J! You are one week old! Where did this week go? Let’s see what J is up to this week:

– You are taking about 2.5-3 ounces of formula. You go about every two and half to three hours between feedings during the day and one night you went three and a half hours! It was awesome!

– You sleep in your pack n play at night and it is fabulous. Borrowing the other pack n play from Aunt K was the best idea ever. With two pack n plays you can sleep in the living room or bedroom and only occasionally snooze in the bouncer. We are hoping to keep this routine up!

– You can sleep through A’s singing, the television, the vacuum.

– You do not like your swing. At all. Not sure why we spent the money on that one. Maybe you will like it when you get older.

– You had your first doctor’s appointment this week, your first bath at home, your first trip to Target, and your first birthday celebration on Saturday for cousin M!

– We are so excited to have you in our lives baby boy! We sure love you!

The Arrival of Baby JAM

Baby JAM is here! With those initials we just know it means he is going to be one hip and sweet baby. Before I put up all the pictures and let them speak for themselves of his arrival, I wanted to provide a few memory moments for my blog memories and our family and friends.

First, the name. I don’t post any of our names on the blog, but I wanted to provide the story behind the name and the initials because our close friends and family knew it took us a LONG time to come up with a name. We didn’t finalize a name until about one month before his arrival and it was after a lot of deliberation and back and forth.

His first name was picked by his daddy and Super A. Pretty much as soon as we knew as it was a boy J was the name my husband picked. However, I couldn’t decide and we had two or three first names that we went round and round with for months. Finally one night at dinner I said “okay I give in, J it is”. A turned to me and said “I like baby brother J, J is a good name”. Which pretty much solidified the choice because for months the only name A would say he liked was Pasta.

The A in his middle name is for my Dad’s brother. As with A I wanted to choose a special middle name from my family and the middle name of A is very special to my Dad and his family, so we settled on that easily once we had the first name.

And of course the M is my husband’s last name which makes it wonderful! We also liked the quirky factor of the initials because we are a bit quirky ourselves, HA! And A has a similar quirk in his initials that we find equally charming.

Second, the delivery and his arrival. I am not big on details when it comes to these sorts of stories, but let’s just say baby J established a personality before he even arrived. My doctor told me that every delivery is different and this definitely proved that point. If the delivery indeed depicts his personality it’s that he does things on his own time. The only thing that was similar from A’s arrival was start to finish it was 12 hours. Almost down to the minute! Despite the drama leading up to the actual delivery J arrived safely and healthy and we are so glad to have him here!

Third, how things are going since we have been home. Despite lack of sleep and A testing the waters a bit it really has been good so far. I have felt monumentally better this time around than I did with A, and it is a really nice feeling. We are adjusting to schedules and two kids, but I really just feel blessed and grateful to have these two healthy boys in our life.

And now on to pictures! These are in order from J’s arrival to us leaving the hospital.

Baby J Preparations

We have been busy getting things prepped around here for Baby J. My parents took the mattresses out of the nursery for us, I am beginning to complete the process of decorating the room, and my husband has been busy getting things out of the attic (trying to muddle through my confusing labeling system…I really don’t know what I was thinking when I labeled half the stuff in the attic), and he has been putting together all the many items that we had forgotten a newborn needs. We have been really lucky to be able to borrow from my family a lot of the big items this time. However, one of the items we purchased was a new swing. Somehow when taking our last swing apart after A, it broke.

After the crazy process of putting the new swing together, I can understand why the old swing broke when we tried to take it apart. I told my husband that we are going to just leave it up forever. HA!

A prepping his drill…he takes putting together baby items VERY seriously.

A helping screw in a piece together. He does amazingly well at this…good hand eye coordination.

Testing out the buttons.

Testing the crawl through capabilities of the swing. Yup. You can crawl through it.

I didn’t take a picture of the finished product, but it looks great! I choose the swing because you can easily remove the seat to use as a bouncer, however, I am a bit bummed that the bouncer does not lay back unless it is in the swing. Which means the bouncer part is not really useful until Baby J gets older. Which means I will be calling my sister to see if we can borrow their bouncer again!
